Roland Barthes
Roland Barthes (12 November 1915 – 26 March 1980) was a French literary theorist, philosopher, linguist and critic.
He stated that once a piece of media is published, the author is no longer the author and that it is down to the people to interpret the film or programme as what they believe is the true meaning of the piece.
In his lifetime Barthes published seventeen books and numerous articles.
His ideas have offered alternatives to the methods of traditional literary scholarship. Barthes' writings have had a considerable following among students and teachers both in and outside France.
